Surge in Swatting Incidents and Bomb Threats
Swatting involves making false emergency calls to dispatch heavily armed police to an unsuspecting victim’s residence, creating dangerous situations for both the targets and responding officers. Since the recent election, over 50 members of Congress have fallen victim to such attacks, leading to approximately 700 investigations. U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger highlighted the strain these incidents have placed on law enforcement resources, noting the limited personnel available to address the surge.
Notable incidents include a swatting attack on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, resulting in a fatal car crash involving a responding officer. Additionally, Rep. Jared Golden of Maine received a bomb threat at his home on Thanksgiving, part of a series of threats against East Coast Democrats during the holiday period. These threats were often accompanied by messages signed “MAGA,” though authorities have not identified the perpetrators, with some indications pointing to foreign IP addresses.
Bipartisan Response and Calls for Action
Leaders from both political parties have condemned these reckless attacks. House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have expressed the need for increased security measures. Mr. Jeffries specifically called for “maximum protection” for lawmakers and their families, emphasizing that threats of violence against elected officials are unacceptable in a democratic society.
Rep. Bryan Steil, chair of the House Administration Committee, is working to expand the Capitol Police’s threat assessment team. Chief Manger also mentioned that the Capitol Police have hired hundreds of new officers since 2021 and implemented improvements in intelligence, operational planning, communication, training, equipment, and staffing to better address these threats.

Jared Golden emphasized the need for both parties to tone down inflammatory language, citing examples where leaders have made extreme statements about opponents. In August 2024, two foreign nationals were charged in connection with a swatting conspiracy targeting lawmakers, private citizens, houses of worship, and businesses. The indictment includes charges of conspiracy, threats, and transmitting threats in interstate and foreign commerce.
